Does Oil Cleansing Actually Pull Oil Out of Your Pores? (I Tested It)
Yes, a cleansing oil really does dissolve the oil, sunscreen and soft gunk sitting in your pores, because oil dissolves oil. It does not empty or shrink your pores, and you still need a gentle second cleanser to wash the oil off.

People love to say oil cleansing is fake. I used to roll my eyes at the gritty fingertip videos too, so I filmed the whole thing on myself. Oil first, one full minute of massage, then a foam cleanser. Here is what actually happened.

Heartleaf Pore Cleansing Oil
Melts away makeup and SPF without clogging pores. Double cleansing step one, done right.
Does oil cleansing actually pull oil out of your pores?
Kind of, and the honest version is more interesting than the hype. Oil dissolves oil. Sebum, sunscreen and makeup are all oil based, so a cleansing oil grabs onto them in a way water and a regular face wash just cannot. When you massage it in long enough, the soft plugs sitting at the top of your pores loosen up and some of them roll right out onto your fingers.
What it does not do is empty your pores or shrink them. Those little gritty bits are mostly softened sebum and leftover product. Pores fill back up, that is just skin doing its job. Oil cleansing is maintenance, not a magic extraction.

How do you do it so it actually works?
This is where most people mess it up. Dry hands, dry face. Pump the oil into your palms and spread it everywhere, then massage for a full minute. Not ten seconds. Spend extra time on your nose, chin and anywhere you feel bumps. Around the 30 second mark is when I start to feel the grit.
Then add a splash of water and keep massaging. The oil turns milky, which means it is emulsifying and will actually rinse off instead of sitting on your skin. Rinse well with lukewarm water.
Why do you still need a second cleanser?
Because the oil picked everything up, and now you have to wash the oil off. That is the whole point of double cleansing. I follow with a gentle foam so my skin feels clean without feeling tight or squeaky.

Heartleaf Pore Cleansing Foam
BHA-infused daily face wash. Gentle enough for every day, effective enough to see results.
I use the Anua Heartleaf pair because the oil rinses clean and does not leave a film, and the foam is gentle enough for every night. You do not need a matching set for this to work, but these two are the exact ones in my video.

How often should you oil cleanse?
At night, on the days you wore sunscreen or makeup, which for me is most days. In the morning I skip the oil and just use a gentle cleanser. If your skin feels stripped or tight, cut back. More is not better here.
Who this is not for
If you are expecting your blackheads to disappear after one minute, this is not that. You might see grit, you might not, and either way it is about consistency, not one big moment. If your skin is very sensitive or reactive, patch test first and keep the massage gentle, scrubbing harder does not get you better results. And if you are dealing with a skin condition that is painful, spreading or not getting better, that is a dermatologist conversation, not a cleansing oil one.
No brand deal. No PR obligation. Just ingredients and data.

Questions I get about this
Is oil pulling for your face fake?
Not fake, just overhyped. Oil dissolves oil, so a cleansing oil loosens sebum and leftover sunscreen at the top of your pores. It does not deep clean your pores forever or shrink them.
Should I put cleansing oil on a wet or dry face?
Dry face, dry hands. Massage for about a minute, then add a little water to turn it milky before you rinse.
Do I need a second cleanser after a cleansing oil?
Yes. The oil picks everything up, and the second gentle cleanser washes the oil off so nothing sits on your skin overnight.
