How do you get volume at the crown with the Wavytalk Airshape?

Clip two rollers vertically right at the part, not angled back with the rest, and keep that top section smaller than every other section on your head. That is the whole trick, the lift lives in the crown rollers specifically, not in the blowout as a whole.

Every time I post this roller set, the comments ask the same thing: how do you get your roots to actually lift instead of just your ends curling. The Airshape wraps every section the same way no matter where it sits on your head, so the volume is not something the tool does automatically. It is something you build by how you divide your hair before you ever pick up the wand.

Why does my crown stay flat even with rollers in?

Because most people treat the top of their head the same as the sides, one normal-sized section, roller in, move on. The crown is the one spot where that does not work. Hair lying flat against your scalp needs a smaller bite of hair and a more vertical angle to actually stand up once it cools, not just curl under.

Two rollers straight up from the part, not swept back. Smaller sections right here than anywhere else on my head.

How do you actually section the top for lift?

I part down the middle first, then take a section at the crown about half the width of what I use on the sides. The barrel wraps it, I slide a roller in while it is still warm, and I clip it pointing up and slightly forward instead of flat back. That angle is what holds the lift once the roller comes out, a roller clipped flat against your head just gives you a bend, not height.

Locking it in with a cool-hold spray once every roller is (Wavytalk Airshape Pro Roller Air Styler Set, Aerely Chacón)
Locking it in with a cool-hold spray once every roller is clipped. I do this before anything cools, not after.

How long do you leave the crown rollers in?

Longer than you think, and longer than the side rollers honestly need. I do the crown first so it gets the most cooling time, then work outward. Pulling a roller while it still feels warm is the single biggest reason people say the volume does not hold. Touch it, if there is any heat left, it is not ready.

This is the part that actually builds the volume, lifting at the root with my fingers once everything is cool, not brushing straight through.

Who this is not for

If your hair is on the shorter side, a crown section this small will not have enough length to wrap around the roller and hold a shape, so skip the small-section method and use your normal section size instead. If you have a cowlick or a stubborn part that always falls a certain way, fight that direction when you clip the roller, not with it, or the lift will not survive you walking out the door. And if you are not going to let it cool all the way, do not bother doing this step differently from the rest of your head, you will lose the height either way.

Does this work with the plain Airshape styler, not just the roller set?

No, not for this specific trick. The lift comes from the roller sitting at that vertical angle while it cools, which needs the clip-in rollers. The styling attachment on its own smooths and wraps but does not hold a shape once you pull it out, so for crown volume specifically you want the roller set version.

Questions I get about this

How many rollers do you use at the crown?

Two, sometimes three if my part is wide that day. More than that and the sections get too big to hold the vertical angle.

Do you need heat protectant with the Airshape rollers?

Yes, I spray a heat protectant through dry hair before I start, same as I would with any hot tool. The rollers heat up like a curling iron, they are not a heatless method.

Can you get crown volume without the rollers, just the wand?

Not the same lift. The wand wraps and smooths the hair but releases the shape as soon as you pull it away, the roller is what holds the section in place while it cools, and that cooling time is where the lift actually sets.
